The Astra Model 1921 (400) is a semi-automatic pistol that was adopted by the Spanish armed forces and police in 1921-23. It is chambered for the powerful 9mm Largo cartridge and operates on the blowback system with an unlocked breech. This design feature was achieved by employing a strong recoil spring and a heavy slide. The Model 1921 was produced until 1946 and was used by both sides in the Spanish Civil War, with 6,000 units purchased by Germany during World War II.
